An Immersive Holiday Experience with Charles Billingsley and Friends at The Virginia ‘Grand Ole’ Opry

I had the good fortune to attend a special concert event titled 'It's Christmas Time Again,' part of The Virginia 'Grand Ole' Opry series, sponsored by Appalfolks of America. Held at the Historic Masonic Theatre located at 510 Main Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia, the event featured Charles Billingsley with Bruce Allen and Jason Burke as the opening act. It combined local talent with national acclaim, offering an evening of joyous holiday music and community spirit.

Bruce Allen and Jason Burke, accompanied by Susan Tedrow, sang several classic Christmas songs, welcoming audience participation in favorites such as "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." They also premiered original music. "Happy Hallow-Thanks-Mas,” a parody song, complete with hats and props and featuring laugh out loud lyrics such as “every emotion is set in motion from absolute fear to cheer,” “the best 3 months of the year” and “we do it all again next year,” poking fun at our consumer-driven society.

As with most performances by Allen and Burke, laughter and elicited emotion shared the stage, transitioning smoothly from humor to the solemnity of “Come Home Day.' a patriotic homage to our men and women in uniform. With the beautiful backdrop of the historic theatre, highlighted by many in the audience waving their phone flashlights, it was truly a heart-touching experience, the singer/songwriters expressing their wishes for “Come Home Day” for our brave men and women to “our-town, USA.” After the short but sweet set, they were joined on stage by Justin Peery, the executive director of The Virginia Opry, for a special presentation as Bruce Allen and Jason Burke were honored with induction into the Virginia “Grand Ole” Opry.

The concert already off to a great start, we now come to the main event: In the world of contemporary Christian music, few names shine as brightly as Charles Billingsley. Renowned for his powerful vocal performances and deeply emotional connection to his music, Billingsley has established himself as one of the genre’s most respected and talented artists. He performed music from his acclaimed holiday album “It’s Christmas Time Again.” The album achieved significant success, debuting at #3 on the iTunes Top 5 Holiday albums, and his single 'Silver Bells,' has become a popular adult contemporary holiday hit and maintains a strong position on the Mediabase A/C Holiday Chart.

Before delving further into Charles Billingsley’s vocal performance, I would be remiss not to highlight his amazing band. Adam Lancaster on keyboard, Jay Ware on drums, and Jonah Horton on bass guitar all deliver outstanding performances. Watching these musicians collaborate was a joy. This event wasn't just about Christmas music; it was a world-class jazz quartet experience with Billingsley switching from vocal performances to the saxophone.

This jazzed-up Christmas music has deeply resonated with both fans and critics. Joyful! The best way I can describe the sound is as if an exceptionally talented singer with an impressive range made a Christmas album collaborating with the Ramsey Lewis Trio. To echo the sentiments of numerous positive reviews, Charles Billingsley's album has been praised for its exquisite execution and for his ability to deftly swing with the band harkening back to the legendary styles of iconic singers such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby.

Charles Billingsley's vocal prowess are marked by an extraordinary range, seamlessly transitioning from deep, resonant lows to Impressive highs within a single composition. This remarkable range, not only showcases his innate talent, it also reflects his disciplined approach to vocal training, emphasizing breath control, crisp diction, and emotional depth.

More than technical proficiency, his ability to forge an emotional connection with his audience sets him apart. His performances transcend mere singing, becoming an earnest expression of his profound passion for music and faith.

The intimate acoustics and cozy 535-seat venue amplified the enchantment of the evening. Also adding to the concert's charm, a unique chance to not only buy tickets to the music performance but also purchase tickets to partake in a special Christmas Dinner with Charles Billingsley and his band before the show. This, for those that chose this option, transformed a Christmas concert into an immersive holiday experience with a family style dinner featuring a festive spread complete with candied yams, herb-roasted potatoes, green beans, juicy chicken breast and pork tenderloin wrapped around stuffing, topped with gravy.

While the culinary offerings were delicious, Charles Billingsley, Adam Lancaster, Jay Ware, Jonah Horton, Bruce Allen, Jason Burke, and Susan Tedrow were the main course, captivating the audience and creating a magical evening.
