Buffalo Creek Escapade: Family Fun with Horseback Rides, Mountain Views and Starlit Evenings

Embarking on a family adventure one hopes it leads to unexpected joys and cherished memories. Our vacation on Buffalo Creek did not disappoint and was an amazing combination of tranquility and relaxation while effortlessly creating fun-filled memories.

Upon stepping into our cozy three-bedroom vacation rental, we were immediately struck by the breathtaking water views and the soothing sounds of the creek meandering around a grand rock wall and its adjacent beach. The magnificent views weren't limited to the outdoors; they followed us into two of the bedrooms, the living room, the dining room, and best of all the screened-in porch, all having amazing views of the creek. Even inside, it felt as though we were still immersed in nature, with the large creek's rhythmic flow and the embracing woods and water view out of more than half the windows.

Much time was spent around a campfire and fishing along the banks of Buffalo Creek. Laughter echoed through the trees with excitement from every tug on a line and pride in the catches, whether medium or small. This is one of many VA creeks stocked with trout; we also caught bass and perch with Rock River recommended small spinning lures.

As delightful as our fishing adventures and our campfire storytelling sessions were, modern children inevitably gravitate towards modern pastimes…. Thus, we also spent hours engrossed in the virtual worlds of Super Smash Brothers and the latest Mario game in between nature and meal times.

Despite all the fun and memories forged at our vacation rental it was still a unanimous family agreement, that our horse excursion was the highlight of our trip! The kids' eyes sparkled with anticipation as they met their gentle mounts, and were given advice and instruction for our hour-long trail ride. Our guide was a really great teacher and her knowledge of the land and passion for the horses and riding made the experience all the more enjoyable. We definitely want to thank Rock River Experiences for recommending her!

The trail wove through the forest starting out, and at times, opening up for stunning mountain views. Above is a picture taken of a super picturesque pond, its surface mirroring the expansive blue sky. Under our guide's watchful eye, we all felt a sense of freedom and connection with both our equine companions and the truly beautiful nature environment. The kids, in particular, were enamored with the horses, having formed a bond on our adventure. After an hour of riding, with hearts full and spirits high, we all were reluctant to dismount.

As the stars began to twinkle overhead, we finished our day with the tried and true combination  of campfire and s’mores. The creek and rock wall provided a beautiful backdrop and the gentle hum of the creek, combined with the crackle of the campfire, added the perfect soundtrack. The kids were amazed at the stars shining so brightly, as can only happen with the lack of city lights. Buffalo Creek offered us more than just a vacation, more than just a break from the daily grind; it gave us memories to cherish, and experiences the kids will never forget.

We will be back again to stay and will follow more recommendations from Rock River Experiences, and to visit Natural Bridge (pictured below). On top of that, we will of course be riding again and looking forward to staying in the same rental or joining with 1-2 other families and staying at their Mountain Lodge, or maybe with an even larger group of families, rent the Buffalo Bungalow again and its neighbor next door the 10 bedroom Buffalo Creek Retreat and have an even grander celebration. We can’t wait to come back!
