Humpback Covered Bridge, Falling Springs Falls,  & Goshen Pass

Humpback Covered Bridge

  • Built in 1857 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it remains Virginia’s oldest covered bridge.
  • Boasts a unique “humpback” design with an arched profile rising about 4 feet higher in the middle—the only example of this curved kingpost-truss construction in the United States.
  • Spanning scenic Dunlap Creek, it once formed part of the historic James River and Kanawha Turnpike.
  • Served vehicular traffic until 1929 and is now preserved as a charming pedestrian landmark surrounded by natural beauty.
  • Located within Humpback Bridge Wayside Park at 1 Rumsey Road, about 3 miles west of downtown Covington, Virginia. Address: 1 Rumsey Road, Covington, VA 24426

Falling Springs Falls

  • An impressive 80-foot waterfall cascading from an overhanging rocky ledge, recognized as one of Virginia’s largest and most picturesque falls.
  • Originally described by Thomas Jefferson in his 1781 manuscript Notes on the State of Virginia as “a remarkable cascade… falling over a rock about 200 feet to the valley below.”
  • Its height was reduced due to travertine limestone mining by local companies in the early 20th century, which also led to relocating the falls.
  • The waterfall now boasts a stunning mountain backdrop, framed by the lush Alleghany Highlands, adding an awe-inspiring natural setting that enhances its photographic and scenic appeal.
  • Features paved walkways and picnic spots, offering accessible and relaxing opportunities for visitors of all ages.
  • Located about 7 miles north of downtown Covington on Route 220. Address: Route 220 North, Covington, VA 24426

Goshen Pass

  • Goshen Pass is a spectacular 3.7-mile mountain gorge carved by the Maury River, surrounded by steep cliffs and lush forests that showcase the natural beauty of Rockbridge County.
  • Recognized as Virginia’s oldest state-managed natural area, Goshen Pass boasts diverse ecosystems including old-growth chestnut oak forests and rare species that highlight its ecological significance.
  • The pass offers a serene scenic drive along State Route 39, with multiple spots for hiking, fishing, swimming, and riverside picnics that invite visitors to relax and explore.
  • Majestic vista views from high above the Maury River provide breathtaking panoramas and excellent year-round photography opportunities.
  • Hiking rocky shelves right by the river creates an amazing nature escape that appeals to both adventurers and those seeking tranquility.
  • Historically, Goshen Pass served as a vital transportation passage through the Alleghany Mountains and continues to captivate visitors with its stunning vistas and tranquil river scenes.
  • Located about 17 miles northwest of downtown Covington on Route 39 and approximately 10 miles north of downtown Lexington, Virginia.
