Winter Warmth at Ben Salem Wayside:  Serene Waters on the Maury River

Despite a dusting of snow just a few days ago, today's visit to Ben Salem Wayside was graced with a surprising and balmy 70 degrees, showcasing the Maury River and its surroundings in a serene state perfect for photography. The riverside beach, typically a magnet for swimmers and sunbathers, lay quiet, its sands untouched by footprints, while the river itself keeps on moving, stocked and ready for anglers to return. Picnic tables, charcoal grills, and historical lock remnants sat idle, waiting for the return of visitors to this tranquil park, which melds historical significance with the undeniable beauty of Rockbridge County.

The Maury River itself flowed with a gentle and purposeful rhythm. Known for being a haven for anglers, especially with its regular stocking between October and May, the river today seemed to await their return, its waters teeming with the promise of a rewarding catch. The quietness of the beach extended to the entire park, where picnic tables and charcoal grills stood unused but inviting, ready for families and friends to gather once more on days as warm or warmer than today.

A notable feature of Ben Salem Wayside is its historical significance. The remnants of the old lock system, a relic from the late 1800s when the park was a bustling hub for canal boats, offer a tangible connection to the past. These historical structures not only provide a unique backdrop for photographs but also serve as a reminder of the area's rich heritage.

Surrounding the park, the scenic vistas of Rockbridge County add to the charm. The intertwining of history and natural beauty is a hallmark of both Ben Salem Wayside and Rockbridge County. Whether it's the height of summer or an unexpectedly warm day in winter, the park offers a peaceful retreat. On days like this, unseasonably warm and clear, the beauty of Ben Salem Wayside shines through in a different light. The contrast of recent snow with today's warmth highlights the area's diverse appeal. It's a reminder that the allure of natural spaces like this one transcends seasons, continually offering new perspectives and experiences to those who visit.
